The 5×5 Approach: Stop Selling the Same Way to Every Client

What if the reason retail feels difficult isn't because you're bad at selling?

What if you're simply talking to every client the same way?

Think about the clients you see every day. One wants to know every ingredient before she buys anything. Another just wants you to tell her what will work. One is watching every dollar, while another buys whatever her favorite influencer recommends.

They're all buying skincare—but they're not buying for the same reasons.

That's where the 5×5 Retail Sales Framework comes in.

Start With the 5 Patient Types

Every client has a different goal. We start by identifying what she's looking to improve:

  • Acne / Breakouts
  • Aging / Prevention
  • Pigmentation
  • Sensitive / Barrier
  • Overall Skin Quality

But knowing her skin concern is only half the picture.

Then Look at How She Buys

Listen to the way she talks about products she's already purchased. You may start to recognize one of five buying behaviors:

  • Researcher
  • Results Seeker
  • Deal Seeker
  • Influenced Buyer
  • Trusting Buyer

These aren't permanent personality types. The same client can behave differently depending on what she's buying.

Here's Where the 5×5 Comes In

5 Patient Types × 5 Buying Behaviors = 25 Sales Scenarios

Two clients can walk into your treatment room with the same skin concern and require completely different conversations.

One pigmentation client might say:

"I've researched all of the ingredients. What makes your recommendation different?"

Another might say:

"I don't care what it is. I just want these spots gone."

Same concern. Completely different buyer.

Your recommendation might even be the same product—but how you present it shouldn't be.

The Goal Isn't to Become "Better at Selling"

The goal is to become better at recognizing your client.

Before making your next retail recommendation, ask yourself:

  1. What is she trying to improve?
  2. How does she normally make purchasing decisions?
  3. What might be holding her back?

Those three questions can completely change the conversation.

And that's only the beginning of the 5×5 Retail Sales Framework.
